“Irrelevant” additional work, limited pay progression and negative societal perceptions are just a handful of reasons why young teachers are leaving schools in their droves, says a long-time principal.

Australia’s education ministers will meet this week for the first time since the federal election, with teacher shortages set to be firmly on the agenda.

Henry Grossek is principal at Berwick Lodge Primary School and told Neil Mitchell there were a lot of aspects to the job that left staff disgruntled.

“If you’re a young teacher, that can crush you,” he said.
