Why we’re not actually seeing ‘plague proportions’ of animals this spring

Wildlife Victoria have dismissed claims Victoria is seeing plague proportions of animals after a report claimed there was a boom of snakes and kangaroos.

Chief executive officer, Lisa Palmer, says animals are being born earlier than normal thanks to a warmer winter and spring.

“While it might look that there’s a lot more of them out there … our wildlife will have their young when the weather warms up,” she told Ross and Russel.

She also revealed while the organisation is usually concerned about summer, the last two Octobers have been a “nightmare”.

“We’ve had floods, even this year, in a short space of time, we’ve had high heat followed by cold snaps followed by bushfires … the weather’s extremely erratic,” she said.
