Why there’s a push for Australia to name heatwaves
There’s a push for Australia to follow the lead of the Spanish city of Seville and name heatwaves in a bid to raise public awareness about the dangers of extreme heat.
Policy and advocacy manager at Renew, Rob McLeod, told 3AW’s Heidi Murphy heatwaves “have killed more people in Australia than any other natural disaster … over the last 100 years”.
“Having a name, having something people can absolutely understand straight away is something that’s really, really critical,” he said.
