Australia’s hospitality sector remains crippled by the impacts of COVID-19 and the issue won’t be resolved until international borders completely re-open, according to the CEO of the Restaurants and Catering Association.

3AW Mornings was alerted to several venues sending out “SOS” messages for staff, saying they would be force to operate on limited hours during the busy festive season because they simply didn’t have enough staff to fill shifts.

Wes Lambert said there were nearly 90,000 open positions available at restaurants, pubs and cafes across Australia today.

“The problem is that about half of those open positions must be for skilled and experienced staff and they’re just not here, or they’ve left the industry because of the constant lockdowns,” he said.

“It hasn’t alleviated, at all.”
