Why social media giants have been held to account by federal government for first time

The Albanese government is taking social media giants TikTok and Meta to task, launching a probe on potential harm they’re causing Australians.

It marks the first time such a wide-ranging parliamentary enquiry on social media has been launched.

Technology regulation expert Dr Rob Nicholls says it’s a landmark moment for how Australians engage with news outlets on social platforms.

“Social media has changed the way news is delivered,” he told Ross and Russ on 3AW Breakfast.

“This is the first time there’s been a parliamentary enquiry.”
