Police will return to Victorian classrooms as part of a revamped police in schools program.

It kicks off next year.

While officers still occasionally take part in school visits, the official program was ditched several years ago.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told 3AW Mornings it would not be compulsory for schools to take part, but specialist officers will be made available to discuss issues like drug and alcohol use, driving and cyber safety.
