The polls have been wrong before, but Neil Mitchell reckons the most recent Newspoll is spot on.

In the first Newspoll of the year released by News Corp, the primary vote for the Liberal-Nationals has fallen three points to 34 per cent while Labor’s has risen by three points to 41 per cent.

Neil Mitchell thinks that’s likely accurate.

“At this stage, unless something extraordinary happens, I think Anthony Albanese will win,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“I think he’ll be something of an accidental prime minister because I think the vote will be ‘Anybody but ScoMo’, rather than ‘We want Albo’, which is why he’s playing this small target philosophy.”

Neil suggested that this mindset was why Mr Albanese was playing it safe in the media, a fact that prompted some 3AW callers to criticise the Labor leader’s lack of strong policy pitches in an interview with Neil Mitchell this morning.
