Myki – the state’s public transport ticketing system – could be replaced just 10 years after it replaced the previous Metcard system.

The initial contract for Myki was approved in 2005, however budget blowouts and complications meant that it wasn’t fully integrated until 2012.

Myki’s contract expires in November 2023, and it’s expected other options will be canvassed.

Professor Graham Currie from Monash University said the biggest issue was that Myki wasn’t keeping up with “new developments”.

“The best of these is credit card payments,” he said on 3AW Breakfast.

“So you don’t need a card you can actually use your normal, everyday credit card on systems like London.”
