Why Melburnians never stray too far from the suburb they grew up in
Real Estate professionals say they’re not surprised by new census figures highlighting Melburnians’ reluctance to move suburbs.
More than 1/3 Victorians have moved to a new suburb over the past five years, but the data shows they’re unlikely to move far away.
Richard Simpson, president of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, told Ross and John it was no shock.
“That’s what the data shows,” he said.
“You’re familiar with the area. You’ve got family and friends close by.
“All the amenities you’re used to – your hairdresser and doctor, or if you’ve got kids the school and childcare.
“So you’re not really interested in moving too far away and having to start again.”
He also explained the impact that trend had on housing affordability.
