Why experts are reigniting calls for a sugar tax
Experts are calling for a sugar tax after research revealed Australians consume over half a kilogram of sugar each week.
Director of the health program at the Grattan Institute Peter Breadon says a sugar tax is the only measure which limits consumption for Australians “sleep-walking into obesity”.
“The benefit is it can make these things a little bit more expensive but you really see manufacturers respond to put less sugar in drinks in the first place,” he told Tony Jones, filling in for Tom Elliott.
