Why Dawn Fraser broke down when she found out about latest honour

Dawn Fraser admits she “burst into tears” when she learned a new award at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame would be named in her honour.

The “Dawn” award will be presented to “a courageous ground-breaker who has demonstrated achievement against the odds and challenged the status quo” in Australian sport.

She told Neil Mitchell she had to ring chairman John Bertrand back when he told her Sport Australia wanted to name the award in her honour.

“Normally, you have awards named after you, or statues, after you have passed – but I’m still alive,” Fraser told Neil Mitchell.

“That’s where the emotion came from.”
