Why China’s agreement with the Solomon Islands should ‘absolutely’ concern Australians
Australians should “absolutely” be concerned about China’s agreement with the Solomon Islands, says 3AW’s foreign affairs analyst.
David Wright-Neville told Neil Mitchell the agreement would basically give China the ability to station its own armed forces on the islands.
“I don’t think there should be much doubt that China’s long-term objectives include its capacity to project hard power at the expense of us and our allies,” he said.
But he said there was “not much” Australia could do about it, saying government had dropped the ball a decade ago when it came to planning.
