A defence strategy analyst says there is a “real possibility” China could accelerate moves against Taiwan, should it view the United States’ response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as weak.

Dr Malcolm Davis, Senior Analyst in Defence Strategy and Capability at Australian Strategic Policy Institute, joined Tom Elliott to discuss the implications of Russia’s moves into Ukraine.

“I think that’s a real possibility,” Dr Davis said when asked whether China would be watching with interest.

“There are certainly growing indications of Moscow and Beijing coordinating their actions.

“China will be watching to see how the US, in particular, responds to determine how they may proceed against Taiwan in the coming years.

“The possibility is a weak US response could see China’s moves against Taiwan accelerated.”
