An Aboriginal elder says there’s no need for direct Welcome To Country ceremonies at large-scale events.

Ian Hunter said when he’s asked to officiate ceremonies at major events, he opts to educate and tell a story, rather than expressly welcome them to the country.

“If it’s a large gathering of people, I don’t actually welcome people to the country if they’re already here,” he said on 3AW Mornings.

“What I usually do is welcome people to the event and (educate) on who the Wurundjeri people are.”
