The anticipated cut to the tap beer excise is a “gender biased” subsidy, according to a report released by the progressive Australia Institute think tank.

Bureau of Statistics figures show only 17 per cent of regular beer drinkers are women.

Chief Economist Dr Richard Denniss told 3AW the policy would do little to help the struggling hospitality sector.

“Our paper simply says that of all the ways to support the hospitality sector, this seems like an odd one,” he said.
