New crime statistics reveal a staggering number of crimes are going unsolved, and the police union boss says police simply don’t have the resources.

Data obtained by the Herald Sun reveals a whopping 85 per cent of non-aggravated residential burglaries in 2022 remain unsolved, while 64 per cent of motor vehicle thefts and 60 per cent of aggravated burglaries are unsolved.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt says police don’t have the resources to investigate lower level crime.

“We are at a point where we’re struggling to see it worse than it is. I mean, police stations are struggling to keep their doors open,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“What this means is we have to rationalise what we can do and prioritise what we can do.”

A Victoria Police spokesperson says the proportion of criminal offences solved in Victoria has remained relatively stable over the past decade. Pandemic years aside, the percentage of criminal offences unsolved by police each year have been between 36.2 per cent and 40.9 per cent since 2013.
