Why a push to ban fireworks is gaining prominence amongst MPs and disability advocates

There’s a growing push to ban fireworks in Victoria, which already has the backing of a number of state MPs.

Disability advocate Shannon Meilak is leading the campaign, citing concerns over the impacts fireworks have on people with post-traumatic stress disorder and sensory conditions such as autism.

Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell is backing the call to ban fireworks, and she says the move is “actually more supported than a lot of people think”.

Ms Meilak says the issue surrounding a potential ban on fireworks is a “multi-faceted issue” and not only impact people’s mental health but also “bronchial conditions”.

“There are a lot of health concerns as well, both mental and physical that people are experiencing due to fireworks,” she told Tom Elliott.
