Why a popular Mornington Peninsula beach was closed on the weekend
A popular Mornington Peninsula beach was closed on the weekend due to a jellyfish invasion.
Point Leo beach was shut on Saturday after bluebottle jellyfish inundated the water.
“The blue bottles just go wherever the wind leads them and obviously that’s kind of an awkward place for bluebottles to get into because the wind has to sort of come around,” world-leading jellyfish expert Dr Lisa-Ann Gershwin explained to Ross and Russel.
If you find yourself stung by a bluebottle in Victoria, don’t reach for the vinegar.
“They recommend that if you’re outside the tropics and you get stung by what’s obviously a bluebottle to rinse it well with sea water and then use ice or hot water for the pain,” Dr Gershwin said.
“If you’re in the tropics, vinegar, vinegar, vinegar because that’s where the ones that can really knock you around mainly occur.”
