Why a Liberal MP wants an ‘opt-out’ system for organ donation
Liberal Upper House MP, Nick McGowan, has called for an “opt-out” system for organ donation instead of the current “opt-in” system.
The opt-out system means it would be assumed a person would donate their organs after death, unless they opt-out.
Last year, 54 per cent of families nationally agreed to organ donation, down from 59 per cent in 2019, with Mr McGowan claiming many Australians will pass away because “we simply don’t have enough organs”.
