More attention must be devoted to increasing liveability outside of Melbourne’s inner suburbs if the city is to reach its full potential, according to a new report.

The Benchmarking Melbourne 2023 report says Melbourne went through a “profound reset” during the pandemic and the city’s “tale of two cities” will constrain Melbourne’s potential if it’s not addressed.

CEO of the Committee for Melbourne, Mark Melvin, says Australia edged back slightly on five of seven measures, compared with cities from across the globe.

“But we went forward on a measure which is called inclusivity and wellbeing,” he told Ross and Russel.

“Remember when we talk about magnetism we’re coming off a really high base in Melbourne.”
