The first visit of a Chinese premier to Australia in seven years has been overshadowed by a bizarre incident involved a formally detailed journalist.

Chinese authorities reportedly tried to block the view of Cheng Lei – who was detailed by China for three years – during part of the ceremony involving Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday.

“They didn’t want her appearing in Chinese footage back home, Strategic Analysis Australia director Michael Shoebridge told Ross and Russ.

“(They would have been thinking) she is the kind of the awkward person to be kept away from communist leadership.”
