A huge boom which some residents thought was “something blowing up” was heard in Kew last night.

The sound came from Kew Recreation Centre on High Street, which is currently undergoing redevelopment.

At about 10pm, the roof of the facility collapsed.

3AW reporter on the scene, Pat Mitchell, says “some people thought it was an earthquake, people thought something had blown up”.

“The sides are still up but the whole roof has caved in. It’s going to be a hell of a mess to clean up.”
