What caused an earsplitting noise in Melbourne’s east last night
A huge boom which some residents thought was “something blowing up” was heard in Kew last night.
The sound came from Kew Recreation Centre on High Street, which is currently undergoing redevelopment.

At about 10pm, the roof of the facility collapsed.
3AW reporter on the scene, Pat Mitchell, says “some people thought it was an earthquake, people thought something had blown up”.
“The sides are still up but the whole roof has caved in. It’s going to be a hell of a mess to clean up.”
The roof of the Kew Recreation Centre has caved in. Fortunately, it happened overnight so no-one was underneath it when it came down. The @Boroondara council planned to open the facility mid-2023 but that date will clearly have to be pushed back. More on @3AW693 pic.twitter.com/nbulw0CIVW
