What Bill Shorten thinks Labor would be ‘wrong not to acknowledge’ post-election
Federal Labor member for Maribyrnong Bill Shorten says while he’s pleased with Labor’s election win, his party would be “wrong not to acknowledge” its decline in primary votes.
More than one-in-three Australians put a minor party first.
At the last election, a Shorten-led Labor secured more of the primary vote than Labor has secured this election, but failed to form government.
Mr Shorten says Labor must seek to regain more of the primary vote going forward.
“In the case of about 35 per cent of the people they picked another party, other than Labor or Liberal,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“I think it would be wrong of us not to acknowledge that we need to win the confidence and get more of the first votes of more Australians at the next election.
“We do that by just keeping our promises and working hard everyday for the people.”
