Werribee GP says proposed $900m children’s hospital is desperately needed

A GP in Melbourne’s west has welcomed a state opposition promise to build a new $900 million children’s hospital in Werribee.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy has today committed to building the new 275-bed Royal Children’s Hospital campus if elected in November.

The population of Wyndham is now larger than the population of Geelong and it’s expected to grow to more than half a million by 2041.

GP at MyClinic in Werribee, Dr Joe Garra, says the area desperately needs health investment.

“We’re home to young families. The median age of people in Wyndham is actually 30,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“Werribee Hospital can only look after less than 40 per cent of our population at the moment, so we’re way too small for our current needs.”

But Dr Garra isn’t sure the move will sway votes in the city’s west.

“They’re all very safe Labor seats out here,” he said.
