‘Weasel words’: Greens leader responds to PM’s Israel statement

Greens leader Adam Bandt has called on prime minister Anthony Albanese to stop using “weasel words” when addressing the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The Australian PM alongside his colleagues from New Zealand and Canada released a joint statement on Thursday, warning Israel against carrying out a ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Mr Bandt said Australia needed to take a tougher stance if they want to enact any meaningful change to end the current Israel-Gaza crisis.

“They’ve stepped up the language in one respect but they’ve still using the weasel words of saying this has to be a sustainable ceasefire,” he told Jacqui Felgate.

“While they keep using these weasel words, we’re going to continue to see tens of thousands of people die.”
