“We dodged a bullet” | How Bunnings staff helped Melbourne avoided a terror tragedy
A leading terrorism analyst says Melbourne “dodged a bullet” when a plot for mass murder at Federation Square was foiled.
And it started with a tip off from Bunnings in 2016.
Staff alerted police after a young man purchased 700 nail gun cartridges packed with gunpowder.
A trio of men were recently found guilty of plotting the attack.
“I think we did dodge a bullet. We were lucky,” Dr David Wright-Neville told Neil Mitchell.
“There have been other instances, which I don’t think I can talk about publicly, where it’s been luck rather than good policing or good intelligence work that has allowed us to avoid a large tragedy.”
