There is always a reminder, says Walter Mikac.

One came just the other day.

“I was at my parents and found some little jelly bean, pink, sandals,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“They’d been there for 25 years… They were Maddie’s.”

Mr Mikac lost his wife Nanette, as well as their two daughters, Alannah and Madeline, in the Port Arthur Massacre.

With a little help from Neil Mitchell along the way, Mr Mikac established the Alannah & Madeline Foundation.

The 25th anniversary of its creation is next month.

It’s a source of great pride for Mr Mikac.

“We have saved thousands of lives by the fact we don’t have semi-automatic firearms in Australia,” he said.

“The mayhem that was caused on that day could have been prevented.

“We’ve only had one mass shooting in Australia since then, in 25 years.”
