Victorian schools urge students and staff to wear masks

Some Victorian schools are reintroducing masks.
On Friday, 3AW’s Dee Dee heard from parents of students at Girton Grammar School in Bendigo, who’d been notified of a return to mask-wearing.
In a statement, the school said it has a “strong preference” that students wear masks, but it’s not a mandatory measure.
“With the high level of student and staff absences already communicated to you, I am writing to advise that from Monday 23rd May, our strong preference is for students in Year 3 and above, and all staff, to wear masks when indoors,” Acting head Dr Emma O’Rielly wrote in a letter to parents.
Neil Mitchell has today been told of another school — Mentone Girls’ Secondary College — which is urging students to don masks.
“While masks are not compulsory in schools we highly recommend that staff and students wear them,” the school wrote in a message to the school community.
Neil Mitchell “thinks its inevitable” more schools will also move to recommend mask-wearing.
“That’s not to say the government will follow, but … maybe it will spread,” he said.
