Some Victorian families are being asked to consider sending their children to kindergarten on Saturdays as the system struggles to cope with the expanded free kinder program.

The Age reports at least four kindergartens are trialling Saturday programs for three and four-year-olds next year.

Early Childhood Australia chief executive Sam Page says “buildings haven’t been expanded and staff teams are still as they were, so rather than turn children away we’ve seen some of these innovative solutions to try and accommodate more children”.

“I think eventually buildings will be expanded and staff teams will be increased and capacity will match what families are looking for,” she told Ross and Russel.
