VicRoads amends astronomical bill but blames EV driver
The driver of an electric vehicle has had his registration reinstated and his bill of over $20,000 amended.
Paul called into 3AW Drive on Wednesday telling Heidi Murphy how he had been stung with a bill of $21,263.75 from VicRoads.
Since then, Paul has been contacted with VicRoads and had the bill changed to around $900.
However the Department of Transport maintains that it was Paul’s fault in the first place.
“Unfortunately on this occasion an incorrect odometer reading was input by the customer and an inflated user-charge was automatically calculated and issued by our system,’’ a spokesperson said.
Paul says he never put in a reading, just submitted a photograph of the odometer.
The photo of the odometer Paul sent into VicRoads.

“The fact of the matter is that we had never entered a figure, we had simply sent the odometer reading,” he said on 3AW Drive.
“The suggestion that we had some how or rather filled in a document that said the kilometre reading … is nonsensical.”
