A much-loved Christmas lights display won’t proceed this year, with the organisers blaming council red tape.

The famous Sandringham lights – which launched during COVID and act as a charity fundraisers – was due to celebrate its fifth consecutive year of dazzling locals, but it won’t proceed after the Bayside City Council made it too difficult to obtain the required permits.

Michael, who organises the display, told Jacqui Felgate the council’s demands on permits had become too difficult this year.

“It’s a bit unreasonable (to ask us for added permits) considering we’re trying to raise as much money as possible and not spend money,” he said on 3AW.

“Working with the council, we thought we were off to a good start.”
