Shocking surge in number of pedestrians killed on Victoria’s roads
Police are calling on pedestrians to take more care, particularly when using their mobile phones or wearing headphones, after a shocking spike in pedestrian deaths.
This year, 15 pedestrians have died on Victoria’s roads.
At the same time last year, that figure was six.
With the winter months and fewer daylight hours approaching, police are concerned the number of pedestrian deaths will continue to rise sharply.
They’re particularly concerned about pedestrians wearing headphones or using their mobile phones while walking, who may not be alert to hazards around them.
Motorists are also being urged to slow down and pay attention, especially in built up areas where there are greater numbers of pedestrians.
