Toyota to shut Altona plant in October
Toyota will shut its Altona plant in October.
The carmaker summoned its 2500 manufacturing staff to a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, where they were told the news.
The last vehicles will leave the production line on October 3.
Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner said the company was committed to supporting its employees.
‘Our priority over the remaining months is to continue to support our employees in every way possible so that they are well prepared for the future,’ he said in a statement.
‘We remain extremely proud of our rich manufacturing history, which spans over 50 years.’
Dave Smith, from the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union, told 3AW Drive workers were more relieved than anything.
‘Obviously they’ve known the plant was going to close for some time,’ he explained.
He said many had been upskilling in preparation for the closure.
