Tony Jones and Peter FitzSimons clash over governor general plan
The Australian Republic Movement wants to see a parliamentary or public vote used to appoint our next governor general.
Sir Peter Cosgrove is set to finish up in the role in March next year.
ARM president Peter FitzSimons has written to the Prime Minister, urging Malcolm Turnbull to call for public nominations or nominate a handful of people for a national vote.
“The people of Australia should have some say,” FitzSimons told 3AW Mornings.
However, Tony Jones is concerned it could make a “mockery” of the process by turning it into a popularity contest.
“You could end up with two-bit celebrity sitting in the house,” he said.
