Tom Elliott has voiced his concerns on the education system after finding out the “extraordinary” NAPLAN results from this year.

The results show one third of students in years three, five, seven and nine in Australia don’t meet the required standards of literacy, numeracy, spelling, reading and writing.

“This suggests that our education system is not doing what it’s supposed to do,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

Former teacher and expert in standardised assessments at Australian Catholic University, Associate Professor Steven Lewis, said it’s “simply untenable” to have one in three students needing additional support.

“It’s a tale of two student populations,” Professor Lewis said.
