Tom Elliott shreds local council over ‘stupid’ push for international influence
Tom Elliott has shredded the Bass Coast Council for trying to lobby the world-recognised Nobel Prize committee.
A councillor has put forward a motion to call on the Prime Minister of Sweden to add a “sustainability” category to the prizes.
“I just cannot stand it when councils go beyond the basics – roads, rubbish and rates,” Tom Elliott said on Thursday.
“It might even be a good idea, but the point is – why on earth is the Bass Council wasting time and money working out ways to try and influence Sweden’s Nobel Prize committee.

Dean Hurlston, from Ratepayers Victoria, said he sadly wasn’t surprised.
“What we seem to be having is this ideological battle infecting our councils,” he said.
