The Program Director of Transport and Cities at the Grattan Institute, Marion Terrill, has explained why Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) have negative implications on the community, with 3AW Drive host Tom Elliott not in agreeance on her take on the utility vehicle.

Ms Terrill believes the SUV’s are too large, and pose a safety risk to smaller cars on the roads, and wants carpark spots reduced for smaller cars only and to build narrower lanes on the roads.

“It does become quite a safety issue, that if you’re the one in the small vehicle, then in any kind of accident you’re going to come off worse,” Ms Terrill told Tom Elliott.

Tom Elliott didn’t agree with her, arguing the community should build around the SUV’s, as they are great and popular.

“They really are amazing vehicles, they can do everything quite well,” he said.

“This is what Australians want to buy, isn’t it better just to accept that that’s what people want and sort of build the infrastructure around that?”
