Tom Elliott clashes with Ari Freiberg over whether or not harsh sentencing stops crime

Tom Elliott has gone head-to-head with recently reappointed chair of the sentencing advisory council over what can be done to stop Victoria’s crime problem.

Professor Ari Freiberg told Tom Elliott stricter sentencing wasn’t the answer.

He said underlying problems that caused people to offend needed to be addressed.

But that left Tom Elliott frustrated and angry.

‘I get sick of this idea of helping the offender and that it’s not really their fault,’ he said.

‘What about the victims?’
