Tom Elliott believes it’s time Australia follows in Canada’s lead and legalises marijuana
Canada has become the second country in the world to legalise marijuana use, in a move Tom Elliott says Australia should follow.
The 3AW Drive host says it could be taxed and regulated similar to alcohol.
“The Canadian PM Justin Trudeau says the black market makes $6 billion Canadian dollars a year profit to organised crime through marijuana,” he said.
“As a result, shortly, you’ll be able to buy marijuana legally from officially recognised shops across Canada.
“Normally I am against drugs of dependence, I don’t want to see heroin legalised, or ice, or smack, amphetamines.
“But I think we should follow Canada’s lead in this regard.
“People smoke marijuana openly walking around in our streets.
“I don’t think anyone gets arrested for marijuana possession I think the police have been told to turn a blind eye to it.
“Australia should follow Canada’s lead, we too should legalise marijuana.
“Sell it openly in shops, tax it, regulate it, just as we do with alcohol.
“Get rid of the billions of dollars of profits that accrue with criminal enterprises.
“Treat marijuana the same as alcohol.”
