‘The way ahead’: Truck industry backs switch to electric vehicles
The trucking industry is backing a shift to electric vehicles which is likely to cut noise, congestion and pollution, and enable trucks to drive through freight curfews.
The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has produced a report in collaboration with the Electric Vehicle Council advocating for a switch to electric vehicles.
The ATA is aiming for 100 per cent of new truck sales to be electric in 2040.
CEO of the Victorian Transport Association, Peter Anderson, says the shift is inevitable, but the technology isn’t ready yet.
“It’s the future, it’s the way ahead, but there’s still a lot of work to do,” he told Ross and Russel.
He says improvements in how far electric vehicles can travel, and how much they can carry, are required to facilitate a widespread shift.
“The technology isn’t there,” he said.
“We need to go a lot further than what we have to make the idea of electric trucks something that the industry will take up in great numbers.”
