A Queensland government minister has suggested an unlikely creature should be a mascot contender for the 2032 Olympic Games.

Queensland Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe declared he has a “soft touch” for the ibis when quizzed about potential mascots for the Brisbane Olympics.

“You’d surely think that something would be better to be the mascot than the bin chicken, right?,” Today Show reporter Mia Glover said to Stephen Quartermain and Emily Power, filling in for Ross and Russel.

“They’re always lurking around.

“It’s kind of sad if our state is represented by a bin chicken.”

But a decision on the official mascots is still a way off.

“It has to go to the Brisbane Olympics Committee, that committee has sort of just started to form,” Ms Glover said.

“We still are 10 years away from the Olympics so you’d hope to heavens we’d have some better options on the table in the next 10 years.”
