The translated road safety sign which could be doing more harm than good

Tom Elliott believes a decision to translate important safety information from the TAC could be doing migrants a disservice.
3AW Mornings was sent a photo of a poster put up in Tarneit, which helps warn motorists about some of the dangers on our roads fully written in Punjabi.
But Tom says the decision to translate vital communication could mean migrants don’t feel the need to learn English.

“I’m guessing in the area…that the TAC has no choice but to translate their advertising campaigns into other languages,” he said on 3AW.
“I can see why we do this, but on the other hand the more that we translate documents, the more we say to migrants – you don’t have to learn English.”
