The traditional subject that appears under threat at some primary schools

Many primary schools are being told to slash geography subjects from the curriculum in a move that’s got some educators concerned.

Pressure to lift poor performance in literacy and numeracy is an apparent driver.

But Tom Elliott says schools would be simply “robbing Peter, to pay Paul” by ditching the subject.

Alaric Maude, Associate Professor of Geography at Flinders University, agreed.

“If what we are doing in schools isn’t working adequately in literacy and numeracy, spending more time on it probably won’t make any difference,” he said.
