A speech from an Australian billionaire has raised eyebrows and prompted the Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary to label the property developer a “piece of work”.

Property developer Tim Gurner says workers became lazy during the pandemic, and it’s hurting productivity.

“We need to see unemployment rise — unemployment has to jump 40 or 50 per cent in my view. We need to see pain in the economy,” he said at the Australian Financial Review Property Summit.

Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary Luke Hilakari says the speech showed “inhumanity”.

“When he says that he wants … a 50 per cent jump in unemployment, that is families …. who are losing their jobs.”
