Brendan Nottle was certain he’d die early.

Having lost both his parents suddenly to heart attacks, his dad 51 and mum 53, he was convinced it wouldn’t matter what he did to look after himself.

“That really plays with your mind,” he told Neil Mitchell’s What Makes You Tick segment.

“There was certainly a long period of time, for me, where I was convinced I’d end up dying at a young age.”

Nottle admits he was a “bit lost” after finishing school and with both his parents gone, described himself as a “typical lad” who “tried a few things” growing up.

But it reached a tipping point.

He moved to Adelaide for a fresh start, unsure where life would take him next.

All he knew was he wanted to get “away” from the “whole God thing” and his connection to the Salvation Army.

That lasted little more than a day.

“This is absolutely true – I walked into the city of Adelaide and walked past the Adelaide Town Hall and heard a brass band playing and thought ‘that sounds good’ and went in to have a listen and walked in on a Salvation Army congress, so there were about 1500 Salvos all gathered there – I thought you’ve got to be kidding,” he said.

It was what happened next that changed his life forever.
