The road safety approach that annoys Tom Elliott

Tom Elliott says he was disappointed to hear Victoria’s top traffic cop on 3AW support a proposal to lower speed limits on country roads in the aim of improving safety.

“They always take the easy route,” the 3AW Drive host said in response.

“The easy route is to cut speed limits.

“The hard route is to improve thousands of kilometres of roads, many of which are absolutely terrible.

“They should fix the roads and improve driver training.

“But that’s expensive and time-consuming.

“So we end up with this inexorable move to cut speed limits from 100 to 80, then perhaps down 70, or 60 in the future.”
