Sam Stosur says Kim Birrell would’ve been put off by the last-minute withdrawal of her opponent at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

13th seed Anna Kalinskaya pulled out through injury just minutes before their scheduled clash, with lucky loser Eva Lys replacing her and defeating Birrell 6-2, 6-2 in the first round.

Stosur said on Wide World of Sports it was a highly unusual situation.

“That (type of news) can throw even the best players,” she said.

“It’s really unusual, in all my years on tour I can’t remember it happening too often to myself.”
