Scott Morrison has called an election for May 21, and a veteran political journalist says he has a “real problem” as polling day approaches.

Political journalist and former host of ABC’s Insiders program, Barrie Cassidy, says social media means elections have become more centred around personality.

But in Mr Morrison’s case, that was already happening.

“It already is anyway, or it’s not so much personality, it’s the character, because of the attacks on Scott Morrison over the last weeks and, in fact, months,” he told Jimmy Bartel and Shane McInnes, filling in for Ross and Russel.

“Those attacks, though exploited by the Labor Party, are essentially coming from within the Liberal Party and that’s a real problem for Scott Morrison.”

Mr Cassidy says the major parties are leaving it too late to announce their policies, and they should get them out ASAP.

“If they’ve got their policies and they want people to hear about them, get it out now because increasingly people are voting early.”
