The questions businesses need answered about the public holiday mourning the Queen
A Victorian business leader says while the Queen was an “incredible leader” and a public holiday to mourn her death is appropriate, there are questions which must be answered urgently.
A national day of mourning has been declared for Thursday, September 22, and with the Grand Final public holiday held the following day, it means Victorians will have a four-day weekend.
Speaking to Neil Mitchell, chief executive of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Paul Guerra, said questions have emerged due to the short notice of the public holiday, and businesses urgently need answers.
“What sort of public holiday is it? Is it like Anzac Day where we don’t open until after midday, or is it a normal public holiday?,” he said.
“If there are going to be penalty rates is there a way that perhaps business can write that off on their BAS statements, or do we as public need to accept that there’s going to be surcharging on that day?
“Business can’t wear the cost of this.”
