Tony Jones has questioned Melbourne City councillor and lord mayoral candidate Jamal Hakim about a kangaroo sculpture which is overdue and has blown out by $20 million in costs.

The sculpture depicts an eight metre high bronze kangaroo sitting in a chair, wrapped in fairy lights, and was originally costed at $2 million and to be finished by 2021, but has now blown out to $22 million and is still three years away.

But councillor Hakim is confident the public artwork, which will be installed in Dodds Street behind the Arts Centre, will be a money spinner and “get people talking around the world”.

Press PLAY to hear Tony Jones question the councillor about the sculpture + how he plans to make Melbourne the world’s most family-friendly city
